The Mass of Chrism was celebrated in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Dundee, on Wednesday 5th April, at 7pm. Bishop Emeritus Stephen Robson and the priests from every part of the diocese celebrated the Mass and renewed their priestly promises.
During the Mass the Holy oils were blessed and distributed to the parishes for use during the coming year. The oil of the sick, which is pure olive oil, and is used for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; the oil of the catechumens, which is also pure olive oil and used prior to the baptism of adults and children; and the Holy Chrism Oil which is olive oil mixed with balsam, symbolizing strength. The fragrant balsam represents the ‘aroma of Christ’ (2 Cor 2:15). Anointing with chrism oil signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is used to consecrate someone or something to God’s service – at Sacrament of Confirmation, Sacrament of Ordination and at dedication of a church.
