As we begin the Month of May 2020, dedicated to Our Lady, we also celebrate the Feast of her husband, St Joseph the Worker. The Gospel of Joseph is a silent one. We do not hear him speak. He powerfully remains silent in all that happens to him. Yet, Joseph, the just man, experiences turmoil and uncertainty. His sleep is sometimes troubled; and on two occasions of difficult discernment he is visited by an angel and is guided in the right path. Joseph is a protector, a worker, a husband and loving foster-father.
He labours for The Lord, whilst not fully understanding the complete picture. Joseph trusts God, protects his family and labours with the tools that he has. He understands our troubles; keeping our families safe in the face of danger, the insecurity of shelter and settled life; the challenges of being a refugee. Perhaps that is why he is patron and protector of the Church?
Today, as we struggle to cope with the Covid19 health emergency, in the many uncertainties of health, employment and relationships, we should have a conversation with St Joseph, ask his advice and above all labour with him, with the tools we have, to build a future for our families, friends, neighbours, strangers and the world, with God’s Grace. Why not look out for the angels that might ease your troubles and concerns in these difficult days? Go to Joseph. Ad ite Joseph.
St Joseph, the worker, pray for us.
